Leading virtual teams

What is hidden behind Leading virtual teams?

In theory, virtual teams give company the ability to build a dream team without boundaries. For employees, it offers the freedom and flexibility to achieve a healthy work-life balance. Unfortunately, in practice, things aren’t always so bright and leading teams from a distance could be challenging.

When people don’t see face to face, communication can get mixed. In a physical office, people don’t even have to open their mouths to communicate. All of us constantly interact with our body language and facial expressions. Not so when working remotely. Collaboration and building trust suffer as well when workers are kilometers apart. Bonding over lunch and meeting for a coffee is not so easy to arrange over skype or zoom. And least but not last/even – sometimes it’s hard to tell if employeеs are taskеd with toо little—or too muсh.

Despite all of this, virtual teams are here to stay. So, in order to successfully manage one, leaders must change their mindset and modify the management style to the online reality. Because even the best leaders could fail in online world, if they don’t adapt to these challenges in an environment where the rules have changed.

"Good teams become great ones when the members trust each other enough to surrender the Me for the We." - Phil Jackson
